Thoracic ultrasound (TUS) has become an essential imaging modality in evaluating pleural disease and conducting pleural interventions. Importantly, the efforts of respiratory physicians have managed to move this expertise outside the constraints of radiology departments and directly to the patient at the bedside. The different acoustic impedance between different tissues and organs produces artefacts known as A lines, B lines, lung sliding, which can help distinguish normal pleural from underlying pathology. This chapter will aim to address some of the technical aspects of pleural ultrasound and provide insights into diagnostic application in pleural disease as well as TUS-guided interventions.
