Research Interest

My DPhil project aims to investigate the involvement of epigenetic and epitrascriptomic alterations in the biogenesis and regulation of circular RNAs in colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is a significant health concern worldwide. It arises and advances from abnormal changes of both genome and epigenome. Epigenetic drugs, able to influence epigenetic modifications, can target cancer cells by activating silenced elements of the genome. Among these elements, complementary Alu repeats have been linked to the formation of circular RNAs - a unique class of RNAs implicated in various diseases. In the context of colorectal cancer, circular RNAs show both tumour suppressing and oncogenic roles, while showing different expression patterns between healthy and cancerous tissue, highlighting their potential significance in cancer detection and treatment.

Background

I received my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Sassari, where I also completed my Master’s degree in biology. As part of that, I was an Erasmus+ Master's student in the Boccellato group where my research project focused on understanding the mechanisms involved in the development of pre-cancerous lesions in the epithelium of the stomach.
