Kenya has joined the global efforts in search of an effective vaccine for COVID-19 with the start of a trial evaluating the ChAdOx1 nCoV-2019 Oxford coronavirus vaccine. Following the necessary approvals from regulators, as well as the national ministry of health, and Kilifi county, the first volunteers for the trial have recently received their vaccinations.

The Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Zheng Zeguang, visited the University of Oxford last week, where he promoted deeper educational exchanges between China and the UK. During the visit, Zheng met with Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor of the university, and had an in-depth discussion on the university’s collaboration with Chinese counterparts.

The Cancer Grand Challenges PROTECT team is led by Professor Stefan Pfister of the Hopp Children's Cancer Center in Heidelberg.

New teaching collaboration with Brazilian universities

The University of Oxford has entered into an agreement with three Brazilian universities, to contribute to the delivery of an undergraduate course in ‘Translational Science’, starting in 2024. The course will teach the full journey of a product ‘from bench to bedside’ as part of any science degree to prepare the next generation of researchers for the translation of their laboratory discoveries into patient care and prevention.

Novel inhaled vaccine for tuberculosis to be trialled

The Jenner Institute at NDM is conducting a new study using the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, the only vaccine currently licensed against tuberculosis. People who have received the BCG vaccine previously will be given it again to compare whether giving it by inhalation is better at protecting people against tuberculosis than giving it through the skin.
Vaccine trial for deadly Nipah virus launched

The first clinical trial participants received doses of the ChAdOx1 NipahB vaccine this week at the University of Oxford. This is the first-in-human trial of the vaccine, being developed by researchers at the Pandemic Sciences Institute.
