\n \n \n \nThe KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme from NDM has participated in a new European-African consortium to improve the way infections in newborns are treated. This project, called SNIP-AFRICA, aims to reduce mortality among neonates in hospitals with sepsis in Africa, in an era of increasing antimicrobial resistance.

\n \n \n \nNDM\u2019s Infectious Diseases Data Observatory and its global collaborators have developed new case report forms providing researchers with a standardised means of recording any data on visceral leishmaniasis, allowing them to compare studies and relate data to the efficacy of visceral leishmaniasis treatments from different groups of researchers.

\n \n \n \nWhile 17 countries have now achieved trachoma elimination status, there is still work to be done, with trachoma responsible for the blindness or visual impairment of about 1.9 million people worldwide. Collaborators are being invited to join a new research project aimed at assessing the drivers for persistent and recrudescent trachoma.

\n \n \n \nProfessor Sir John Irving Bell, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford and former Head of Department of the Nuffield Department of Medicine, has been appointed a Companion of Honour in the King\u2019s Birthday Honours list. He was knighted in 2015 for services to medicine, medical research and the life science industry.

\n \n \n \nWithin weeks of the pandemic starting, the Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) began antibody testing as part of the UK\u2019s ONS COVID-19 Infection Survey. The platform successfully tested millions of blood samples over three years, providing invaluable information on how vaccinations and previous infections affect the chance of getting COVID-19 again.

\n \n \n \nNDM\u2019s OUCRU and partners have been developing a training programme to enhance the capacity of local health workers in Viet Nam, who are often low-paid volunteers with little training. Communes that participated in the training programme saw up to a 42% increase in booster vaccination uptake compared to the communes that did not participate.

\n \n \n \nWe regret to announce the passing of Professor Dominic Kwiatkowski, Professor of Tropical Paediatrics at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, and a renowned researcher who dedicated his life to the research on malaria. Prof Kwiatkowski passed away in April 2023 at the age of 69.
