\n \n\n \n \n \nA special issue of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B on challenges and opportunities in the fight against neglected tropical diseases has been released today. This special issue, compiled and edited by Kathryn Forbes, Maria-Gloria Bas\u00e1\u00f1ez, D\u00e9irdre Hollingsworth and Roy M. Anderson, celebrates progress made since the 2012 London Declaration on NTDs and discusses challenges currently faced to achieve these goals.

\n \n\n \n \n \nThe KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme from NDM has participated in a new European-African consortium to improve the way infections in newborns are treated. This project, called SNIP-AFRICA, aims to reduce mortality among neonates in hospitals with sepsis in Africa, in an era of increasing antimicrobial resistance.

\n \n\n \n \n \nResearchers at the Worldwide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN), hosted by NDM\u2019s Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health, investigated the variability in white blood cell count in patients with uncomplicated malaria and found that using the assumed value of WBC in the calculation of parasite density led to a significant underestimation of parasite count for children and potentially sub-optimal treatment.

The winning submissions were selected from hundreds of essays penned by biomedical graduate students and health professions trainees from 25 countries. \n \n\n \n \n \nThe multisite Phase I HIV-CORE 006 HIV vaccine clinical trial, run by the Globally Relevant AIDS Vaccine Europe-Africa Trials Partnership (GREAT), has concluded successfully. Preliminary analysis of the immunological trial results demonstrates the induction of high frequencies of broadly specific T cells that recognise functionally conserved regions on HIV-1 and are therefore more protective.

\n \n\n \n \n \nResearchers running the University of Oxford-led Com-COV3 study have reported the results of a study assessing the immune response and side effect profile of \u2018mixed\u2019 two-dose COVID-19 vaccine schedules in adolescents aged 12 to 16 years - administering either a full or a one-third (fractional) dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or a full dose of the Novavax vaccine at least eight weeks after a first full dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
