Art & Science

Creative representations of complex ideas are an approachable and tactile way of engaging the wider community in research.

The Nuffield Department of Medicine is committed to creating opportunities for our scientists to reach broader audiences and a different demographics, and feel that engagement with artists it's a great way to achieve this. Major UK funding organisations are also getting behind this concept: The National Institute for Medical Research supports an experimental and interdisciplinary Art Programme, which actively encourages artists to engage with scientists, while the Wellcome Trust Arts Awards support imaginative and experimental arts projects that explore biomedical science. The Wellcome Collectionalso supports exhibitions that fuse science and art.

Having successfully participated in a number of art projects, The Nuffield Department of Medicine is now exploring ways in which it might bring artists and scientists together for future exhibitions, commissions, collections and residencies.
