Nick White: Malaria and drug resistance – confirming and responding to ACT resistance in SE Asia

For World Malaria Day 2016, Philippe Guérin (WWARN), joined Sumi Biswas from the Jenner Institute, Dominic Kwiatkowski from MalariaGen, Katherine Battle from the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) and Nick White from the Wellcome Trust Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU). The speakers discussed their innovative research and multi-disciplinary collaborations across Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe to support the global goal of eradicating malaria.

Malaria kills more than half a million people every year. Following a number of groundbreaking clinical trials, Professor Nick White and his Thailand team successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of artemisinin drug therapy for malaria in adults, children and infants. He also pioneered artemisinin combination therapy, the first-line treatment for malaria worldwide.
