1. About the study

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had a major impact across the UK.

In April 2020, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey was commissioned to discover how many people in private households:

  • had COVID-19, with or without symptoms
  • had previously caught COVID-19, with or without symptoms
  • had a strong response to a COVID-19 vaccination

We did this by asking questions, taking nose and throat swabs, and for some participants, taking a blood sample.

In line with the changing path of the pandemic, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) are currently reviewing their approach to COVID-19 surveillance.

We have paused survey data collection while these discussions take place. Unfortunately, any swabs or samples that arrived at labs after 21 March 2023 will not be processed, and participants will not receive vouchers or results from these samples.
