Introduction

The Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM) offers funded summer internships to outstanding students from China and Japan. Students in the final year of their undergraduate degree, or first year of their masters can apply. The award covers travel and living costs for a two-month internship in a departmental Research Laboratory.

Ruyi Chen (intern from China)

I am from Nankai University in China, and I am a third-year undergraduate student. I have come to the NDM as a summer student for eight weeks. Now, I am learning in the department of structural biology (STRUBI). From the first day I came to STRUBI, I have learned many things about structural biology, such as different Measures and the equipment used here. I can do many things by myself now, such as gene cloning, tissue culture, protein purification and crystallisation.

James Tian (Intern from China)

Before I came to Oxford, I got my master's degree in psychiatry in China. The degree is for clinical practice. Therefore I know more about seeing patients than doing experiments. But during my internship in the hospital, I found there are so many psychiatric diseases that need to be explored. The mechanisms, the pathologies, the genetic factors and biomarkers of the psychiatric diseases are still unclear. During the study, I found how variable meaningful research is for the diagnosis and treatment for clinical practice. In the Wellcome Trust Centre, I learned how to do DNA extraction, how to test DNA concentration and expression, how to measure the tissues, how to do the gene sequencing, and I found the methods are very interesting.

Yuri Tanaka (Intern from Japan)

I'm working in Oxford for eight weeks, under the supervision of Professor Simon J. Davis. His laboratory studies, how cytokine receptors are organised and work on white blood cells. My project involves the production of the purified forms of the units of the cytokine receptors.

Narrator

Interns enjoy the experience of being in a beautiful and historic city. They also get the opportunity to live in an Oxford college with other students from a variety of backgrounds in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere.

Yuri Tanaka (Intern from Japan)

The people come from different countries and they study different fields, for example, religion, literature, mathematics, economics.

James Tian (Intern from China)

I found that students here are really enjoying their life and their studies. After supper, I would go to the meadow to play frisbee and football with my friends and we really enjoyed that. The experience in Oxford will be a very wonderful memory for me for many years to come.

Narrator

Each summer, the Nuffield Department of Medicine welcomes a dozen students from China and Japan to undertake research internships, working on different projects throughout the department.

James Tian (Intern from China)

I would say to someone considering the summer internships, to go for it.

Ruyi Chen (intern from China)

I think NDM is a good place and if you get a chance to study here, it will be a fantastic experience for you.
