Jacinta Nzinga is a DPhil student at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Nairobi, Kenya. She examines how efforts to improve service delivery through adoption of recommended practices in Kenyan hospitals depend on health workers’ responses to improvement efforts, hospital context, actions of unit heads and the interaction between them.
Researchers from Europe and Africa gathered in Oxford on the 27th and 28th February 2014 to share knowledge on health systems research, economics and governance in health management.
The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme is a major Wellcome Trust’s overseas programmes. Its work has had a major influence on national and international health policy. Research spans a wide variety of topics and disciplines including research on malaria and bacterial and viral infectious diseases, work to map disease risk and intervention coverage and work on research ethics and health systems strengthening.
Jacinta's research is on the roles in planning and coordinating the production of services by mid-level managers in Kenyan public hospitals and how they bridge the gap between the senior level management and front line workers.
She observes that there is little research on mid-level managers in low-income settings despite their importance in implementing better practices in hospitals.
Strengthening mid-level managers is required to help improve performance since Kenyan hospitals have leadership gaps and poor communication between the senior administration and the lower cadres hence preventing better practice.
