The event is part of the activities of the Network of Clinical Investigation applied to Chikungunya (REPLICK for the initials in Portuguese) that presents results of research on Chikungunya, lead by Fiocruz and taking place in various cities of Brazil, affected by this infectious disease.

The meeting and the work on the vaccine front takes special relevance in Rio de Janeiro, a city that has been severely affected by Chikungunya cases, reaching 6,765 cases in only four months during 2019, more than half of the total cases registered during the peak of the outbreak in countries like Mexico during 2015, to put it in perspective. However, a number of 13,000 cases has been estimated to have taken place in these four months. Members of the Brazilian MInistry of Health and journalists were present, and showed great interest in Oxford's vaccine development.
