"Genome research and human health: current applications and translational potential in inflammation and infectious diseases", Oaxtepec, Mexico, June 24-28, 2015

Genomics workshop group photoOaxtepec, Mexico

June 24-28, 2015

Throughout five days 40 researchers form Mexico and the UK met to discuss how genomics is revolutionising biomedical research and how it is rapidly finding applications in clinical and public health settings. The workshop, which was well attended by researchers from 6 different UK institutions and 13 Mexican institutions, funded by generous British Council-CONACYT Researcher Links and IMSS grants, provided a space for discussing and establishing potential collaborations between UK and Mexican researchers. Scientists, clinicians and public health practitioners were encouraged to establish cross-disciplinary work in key challenges in scientific research and capacity building as well as formulating strategies for long-term sustainability. You can find out more details about the workshop by visiting the original Mexico-UK Genomics Workshop event site and downloading the Full Programme.

A few of the themes explored include:

  1. Introduction, overview of the workshop and translational research framework.
  2. Genomics and inflammation.
  3. Big data analysis and interpretation (computational genomics).
  4. Bench-to-bedside research in infection and immunity.
  5. Model organisms and human research.
  6. Clinical and public health research and applications.
  7. Funding and career development.
  8. Next steps: How to take existing and new collaborations forward.

Several amongst many of the achievements include:

  1. Research projects and programmes
  2. Capacity building
  3. Innovation and translation
  4. Analytical methods
  5. International cooperation

Participants have maintained communication after the workshop and it is expected that many new research lines, partnerships, meetings and joint funding proposals will result from this.
