Alejandro Sanchez-Flores is a bioinformatician at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM in Spanish), currently in charge of the Massive Sequencing and Bioinformatics core facility, at the Biotechnology Institute (IBT in Spanish) in Cuernavaca, Morelos. With a Ph.D in Biochemical Science (IBT-UNAM in 2007), he specialized in Bioinformatics in the Protein Structure and Evolution area. Afterwards, he switched to the Genomics area where he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Taenia solium Genome Project, working with the Sanger and 454 DNA sequencing technologies.

He continued working in the thriving area of Genomics, Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Technologies and Bioinformatics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (2009-2012). In 2012, he started as a full time Associate Researcher at IBT-UNAM, leading the mentioned core facility, in order to help other colleagues with projects in the 'omics disciplines. As a result, a collaborative network was born where he provides genomic services to several research groups inside and outside of the country.

He has participated in the sequencing and analysis of parasite genomes, including helminths, protists from the Kinetoplastida and Apicomplexa groups, and other non-parasitic organisms. Recently, he has endeavoured in the comparative genomics and metagenomics fields developing new bioinformatics pipelines.  

He is interested in several 'omics areas and its data integration, collaborating with several groups where he provides the Bioinformatics and NGS knowledge. He has published several international scientific papers and he also acts as a reviewer for several journals.
