Martha Eva Viveros Sandoval Eva Viveros Sandoval
Head of the Haemostasis and Vascular Biology Laboratory in the “Dr. Ignacio Chávez” School of Medicine, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, and NDM Visiting Professor of Haemostasis & Vascular Biology
Prof Martha Eva Viveros-Sandoval holds a PhD in Biochemical Sciences from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. After postdoctoral work at the San Carlos University Hospital in Madrid, Spain, she joined the Postgrade Division in the UMSNH School of Medicine, working from 2007 to July 2015 as general coordinator of the Masters programme in Health Sciences (Maestría Ciencias de la Salud). Her main research interest is the study of novel endothelial dysfunction and platelet activation biomarkers in inflammation, thrombosis and infection as well as the role of platelets as coordinators of inflammation and immune response during viral infection. She is also interested in the mechanisms leading to thrombocytopenia and bleeding in viral infections such as severe dengue.
Prof Viveros-Sandoval is currently Head of the Haemostasis and Vascular Biology Laboratory (Laboratorio de Hemostasia y Biología Vascular) in the “Dr. Ignacio Chávez” School of Medicine, in the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, UMNSH, in the city of Morelia, Mexico.
As part of the NDM vaccine development consortium, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the University of Oxford and the UMSNH in 2015. Under this agreement, two different research projects have arisen: one for a pre-grade student and the other for a doctoral student.
As platelets and endothelial cells from the vascular wall represent a nexus at the intersection of haemostasis and host defence, the role of platelets or molecules released from them as vehicles for vaccines or other immune-modifying strategies is of growing interest. Based on the above, the creation of a collaborative laboratory where these issues are addressed is of great interest.
