\n \n \n \nIn collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City's healthcare sector, NDM's Oxford University Clinical Research Unit has successfully identified the primary agent causing the outbreak of pink eye disease. Testings revealed an unexpected finding: enterovirus was the primary agent, contrary to previous reports from Vietnam wherein adenovirus was the culprit.

\n \n \n \nToday Oxford University has launched a new global collaboration backed by \u00a38 million funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The project will be spearheaded by Professor Teresa Lambe, Professor of Vaccinology and Immunology and Calleva Head of Vaccine Immunology in the Department of Paediatrics and Professor Paul Klenerman, Sidney Truelove Professor of Gastroenterology and Director of the Translational Gastroenterology Unit at NDM, both of whom are Principal Investigators at NDM\u2019s Pandemic Sciences Institute.

\n \n \n \nThe World Health Organization\u2019s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) and Malaria Policy Advisory Group (MPAG) have recommended Oxford\u2019s R21/Matrix-M\u2122 malaria vaccine for use. The highly effective vaccine developed by the Jenner Institute and the Serum Institute of India has demonstrated high efficacy with a reassuring safety profile.

\n \n \n \nA new clinical trial to find a vaccine to protect people against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) launched on 15 September 2023. This is the third Phase I clinical trial of the ChAdOx1 MERS vaccine, developed by researchers at the Pandemic Sciences Institute. It is the first trial in older people.

\n \n \n \nResearchers at the Pandemic Sciences Institute (PSI) are closely monitoring the current outbreak of deadly Nipah virus in Kerala, India. To date, there have been five confirmed cases and two deaths reported, with many of those affected being family members of the first patient. The Institute has collaborations with scientists involved in the response, including virologists at the National Institute of Virology in Pune.

\n \n \n \nWhile 17 countries have now achieved trachoma elimination status, there is still work to be done, with trachoma responsible for the blindness or visual impairment of about 1.9 million people worldwide. Collaborators are being invited to join a new research project aimed at assessing the drivers for persistent and recrudescent trachoma.

\n \n \n \nProfessor Sir John Irving Bell, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford and former Head of Department of the Nuffield Department of Medicine, has been appointed a Companion of Honour in the King\u2019s Birthday Honours list. He was knighted in 2015 for services to medicine, medical research and the life science industry.
