Unltrasound of the shoulder is now an accepted and accurate means of detecting pathology in the rotator cuff. There is a long learning curve and several potential pitfalls to diagnosis. These include retraction of the supraspinatus anisotropy and calcification. One method of examination is described with advice on how to avoid mis diagnosis. The clinical relevance of the technique is discussed concluding that ultrasound is a valuable tool in the management of shoulder disorders.
