Welcome to the Nuffield Department of Medicine (NDM)
We are a globally active research and teaching department based in several institutes and centres, including the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics, Jenner Institute, Big Data Institute, Centre for Medicines Discovery and more. We have around 1,200 employees in the UK and 2,000 staff overseas, with major research units in Kenya, Thailand, Vietnam and several other countries.
NDM has pioneered the use of structural, cellular biology and genetics to understand and treat human disease; and it is distinguished by its excellence in the clinical disciplines, including tropical medicine and infectious disease, cancer, immunology, and vaccinology.
We are proud of our many positive impacts on human health: As examples, NDM scientists led by Sir Nick White conducted the first international efficacy trials of artemisinin therapy for malaria and have led the world in developing combination therapies and other strategies to combat malaria resistance. In 2019 Sir Peter Ratcliffe received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for elucidating the pathways regulating hypoxic gene regulation.
