Research Biography
I am an Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Consultant Respiratory Physician. My main focus of work is in translational science in the field of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), particularly in exacerbations of COPD. The group investigates the mechanisms and therapeutic strategies aligned to endotypes of COPD.
So far, by studying eosinophils in COPD, this work has shown that evaluation of eosinophils relates to frequency of exacerbations, response to treatment with inhaled steroids and led to drug discovery using monoclonal antibodies to prevent exacerbations of COPD. My work has influenced international guidelines, such that eosinophils are now measured routinely in clinical practice for treatment initiation and continuation.
My group, consists of 1 postdoctoral scientist, 4 senior research nurses, 2 clinical fellows, 1 research assistant, 1 trials manager and 3 DPhil students. The group are currently investigating the following:
- Characterisation of patients with COPD, utilising near-patient point of care testing to deliver systemic corticosteroid treatment at the time of an exacerbation.
- Using mathematical approaches to investigate biological, physiological and symptom changes in COPD
- The epithelial cell response to infection, particularly non-typeable H.influenzae and immunity in COPD
- Establishing the role of the eosinophil in the mechanism of COPD.
- Developing monitoring devices and tools, with abilities to influence clinical change in asthma and COPD
