Directing your development

In supporting you to direct your own career pathway and progress your development, the University has a wide range of programmes, resources and courses. Information about training and development opportunities and details about training providers across the University are available through the Staff Gateway training and development pages, as well as through  People & Organisational Development (POD). You may wish to view the Developing Yourself pages on the POD website,  and you may find the Careers Services pages useful, as they include guidance for generating career decisions and how to make a career decision.

You may find some of the Departmental resources helpful, such as our Career Profiles pages and the host of researcher podcasts including the Women In Science talks. These inspirational resources may help you in identifying the opportunities available to you and enhance your understanding of the pathways and key decision points within your own career.

Some of our research funders have developed additional career pathway resources. The MRC provide an Interactive Career Framework, which gives information on possible options for careers and funding in biomedical research within academia and/or industry. You may find it helpful to use this framework to explore your options. Vitae provide a wealth of information for researchers, from training and development guides to researcher career stories.

Don’t forget to look at LinkedIn Learning. Oxford’s learning resource that gives you access to hundreds of self-help learning resources. Teach yourself to project manage, build your communication skills, create an effective team and much more.

Support available

The PDR is a tool by which you can facilitate career development discussions. We would encourage you to talk with your line manager who may be able to help you reflect and consider your career options, offer support and provide assistance in your career mapping. You may also wish to consider Mentoring or Coaching which can be hugely effective tools in the support of your development, and in helping you to reach your potential. Our mentoring and Coaching page details the range of different schemes available to help you to find the right one for you.

We would encourage all staff to view our NDM Training Programme of Training Courses, which have been developed specifically for NDM staff. In addition, the Guide to Staff Development pages provide an introduction to development at Oxford for professional and administrative staff.

Listed here are some of the University departments which offer training and development opportunities to University staff. Staff are encouraged to make the most of these opportunities to enhance their personal and career development.

Researchers and DPhil students may wish to take the opportunity to visit the Careers Service who offer courses, events, and a whole host of resources or attend one of the one-to-one careers sessions run by the Careers Service. Appointments can be used for exploring career options, guidance in making decisions, improving CVs, cover letters and applications, preparing for and practicing interviews and addressing any other career-related needs.
