Research team receives $25m Cancer Grand Challenges award
7 March 2024
A global, interdisciplinary team of researchers, including the Centre for Medicines Discovery’s Professor Frank von Delft, has been selected to receive a Cancer Grand Challenges award of up to $25m over five years to tackle the solid tumours in children challenge. The Cancer Grand Challenges PROTECT team is led by Professor Stefan Pfister of the Hopp Children's Cancer Center in Heidelberg.
OUCRU partner hospital receives Viet Nam medical achievement award

Oxford University Clinical Research Unit’s host and partner in Ho Chi Minh City, the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, was recently honoured with the Vietnam 2023 Medical Achievement Award at an event hosted by Voice of Ho Chi Minh City (VoH).
ASAP Discovery Consortium wins 2023 FASEB Dataworks prize

The AI-driven Structure-enabled Antiviral Platform (ASAP) has won an Exemplary Achievement Award from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The prize recognises data practices in biological and biomedical research labs during the active phase of research.
New NIHR Oxford Senior Research Fellows named

Researchers from a wide range of disciplines have been appointed to be the next cohort of NIHR Oxford Senior Research Fellows - seven mid-career researchers identified as having the potential to become future translational research leaders. The cohort includes Dr Matthias Friedrich from the Translational Gastroenterology Unit in NDM’s Experimental Medicine Division.
Dr Azim Ansari recognised as a future leader in hepatitis research

Dr Azim Ansari, Sir Henry Dale Fellow and Group Leader at NDM’s Experimental Medicine Division, is among the three outstanding hepatitis researchers who have been announced as winners of the Medical Research Foundation’s Emerging Leaders Prize.

Scientists receive the European Hector Research Award for HIV

The AELIX-002 study group research was awarded the European Hector Research Award in HIV for research on the therapeutic vaccine against HIV. The researchers include Prof Tomáš Hanke, Professor of Vaccine Immunology at the Jenner Institute at NDM.
Prof Philippe Guérin receives ASTMH medal

Professor Philippe Guérin, Director of the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory and WorldWide Antimalarial Network, has been awarded the Bailey K. Ashford Medal for his 'distinguished' work in tropical medicine.
Prof Arjen Dondorp receives the 2023 George Macdonald Medal

Professor Arjen Dondorp has been awarded the highly prestigious 2023 George Macdonald Medal. This medal recognises outstanding contributions to conducting research leading to significant improvements in health in the tropics. It is a joint award from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (RSTMH).

Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert awarded Freedom of the City of London

Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, who became the Oxford Project Leader for the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine at the Nuffield Department of Medicine in 2020, has received the Freedom of the City of London, in recognition of her outstanding achievements in, and contribution to, science and public health.

Louise Downs announced as winner of Lasker Foundation essay contest

The Lasker Foundation today announced the five winners of its 10th annual Lasker Essay Contest. The winning submissions were selected from hundreds of essays penned by biomedical graduate students and health professions trainees from 25 countries. The winning essayists explored unanticipated ethical issues encountered during their training and strategies used to address them.

Eric and Wendy Schmidt have announced the members of the 2023 cohort of Schmidt Science Fellows, including T. Bertie Ansell, a researcher at NDM's Division of Structural Biology. The 32 exceptional early career scientists will receive support to develop research projects and the leadership skills necessary to harness interdisciplinary science to tackle some of the world’s most intractable problems.
Prof Ellie Tzima wins GlaxoSmithKline Award

Professor Ellie Tzima is a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow and Professor of Cardiovascular Science at Nuffield Department of Medicine’s Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics. The award will be presented to her in 2024.
